NUR 705 Principles of Leadership

Pre or Co-requisite: Nursing Graduate Core and Education and Administration Leadership Foundations.

Course Description: This course provides students with the fundamental tools necessary to assume leadership roles in diverse health care and academic settings. The nursing leader of today is proactive and understands the ever-increasing challenges of the health care industry and higher educational enterprise. Students are given the theoretical foundation to enhance their leadership skills. Various principles of leadership, that have occurred over time, particularly transformational situational and relational leadership, are studied. Guiding, directing, teaching, motivating, coaching, and mentoring others toward goal setting and successful outcomes are considered. Individual leadership styles, as well as emotional intelligence and the concept of transference as they pertain to leading and following are examined. The student will have an opportunity to develop consider systems assessment in order to plan projects addressing contemporary leadership issues in the health care and academic practice settings. The course also provides students with the tools necessary to recognize and negotiate potential barriers to effective leadership.
