NUR 624 Decision Making in Health Care Systems

Course Description: Master's Core Course. This course focuses on the decision-making process within the health care system in the United States from a primary health care perspective. Students will explore philosophical underpinnings and models affecting decision-making in advanced practice nursing. Current issues and trends influencing advanced practice nursing in a primary health care context are discussed. Emphasis is on gaining understanding of frameworks and the use of self-reflection to apply knowledge in the selection of appropriate approaches to decision-making. Factors influencing decision-making including political, economic, family, cultural, spiritual, ethical, legal/regulatory, organizational, and media will be evaluated in relation to advanced practice nursing. Health care delivery systems and the role of health policy in shaping decisions will be explored.
