NURS 250 Gerontological Nursing

Students must fulfill the required prerequisites and complete a 100-level Psychology course with a minimum passing grade of D-. Clinical calculation exam and clinical clearance required. Registration restricted to Nursing majors only.

Course Description: This course focuses on the care of the older adult. Concepts of healthy aging, health promotion and disease prevention, safety, growth and development, independence, and loss are discussed among other vital issues effecting aging adults. The student will conduct developmentally appropriate and culturally sensitive assessment and interventions. The role of the nurse in managing common geriatric syndromes, medications, transitions between care environments, and end-of-life and palliative care issues are emphasized. Students will have the opportunity to practice in a variety of gerontological settings.

Course Rotation: PL: Spring and Summer.
