NURS 476 Community and Environmental Health Nursing

Course Description: This course takes an evidence-based approach to promote and improve the health of populations. Public health nursing issues, health disparities, and determinants of health in the global environment are explored. Epidemiologic principles are employed in a community assessment. The scope and standards of public health nursing are applied in selected practicum locations. Students partner with community based organizations to apply concepts of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention in creating health promotion, early intervention, and disease management strategies for individuals, families, and populations. Cultural competency is developed through work with diverse clients from across the life span. The advocacy role of public health nurses is emphasized in terms of social justice and professional accountability for vulnerable groups.
