PAPE 312 Acting Shakespeare for the BA Actor

Course Description: This course provides students a thorough exploration of the major components of Shakespeare's work-sonnets, monologues, and scenes-and of how to unlock the rich emotional matter of the text while debunking the myth that Shakespeare's language is too difficult or complex for the modern actor. The course uses classical text to broaden the expressive potential of each actor through exploratory activities designed to harmonize the actor's emotional impulses and intellect directly to the heightened language. With a wide range of vocal and physical exercises, the actor learns that acting Shakespeare is essential to the development of a well-rounded artistry.
