SOC 296C Topic: Sociology of Torture

Prerequisite: 3 credits in either SOC, ANT, WS, PSY, or PHI. New Core: Fulfills 3 credits in Area of Knowledge V.

Course Description: This course examines torture as an historical social phenomenon. It is seen as a means of domination and control as well as a means of ritual and initiation. Students will study the relations of human torture to culture with particular attention on both the developing world and torture in the "West." The course will deal with such topics as torture as social policy, torture in art and literature, and the religious and political basis of human torture.
