SOC 297A Topic: War and Society

New Core: Fulfills 3 credits in Area of Knowledge V.

Course Description: This course is designed to provide students with a thematic introduction to the sociological study of the relationship between "War and Society." It will look at diverse subject areas that include: how culture and war interact to produce meaning, war and the role of media, gender relations and war, the relationship between science and war, as well as how techno-scientific developments with respect to war are related to globalization and modern forms of capitalism. Major theorists from classical and contemporary sociological theory will be examined to see how they might inform a critique of war and its role and impact on society. The course also examines the relationship between warfare and social change in an effort to anticipate the future of warfare as a tool in politics.
