THR 230 The History of Spoken Word

Course Description: Popular culture has embraced the genre of Spoken Word, Performance Poetry and Hip-Hop. This course will examine how Spoken Word has evolved from its earliest stages and most primitive beginnings to what it is today. Students will study the historical origins of the art and will participate in a critical analysis of both ancient and modern chants, lyrics and poetries from the near and far corners of the glove. Selected readings, audio recordings and video clips will be discussed both for their artistic value and for the role they play as historical accounts that shed light on the social, moral and political struggles of a people.
